Open Cloud Standards Incubator Announced
Cloud computing is growing. Virtualization is becoming the primary way to deliver software solutions to enterprise customers. Interoperability between the enterprise and cloud computing services is lacking.
The Distributed Management Task Force has announced the launch of the Open Cloud Standards Incubator. This initiative hopes to bring focus to cloud resource management protocols, packaging formats and security mechanisms with the intent of enabling interoperability.
Extensions are needed to enable interfaces between private cloud in the enterprise and the private/public cloud service providers. These extensions to the DMTF specifications may include the Common Information Model [CIM], the Open Virtualization Format [OVF] Web-Based Enterprise Management [WBEM] as well as collaboration with other industry standards bodies.
The incubator is focused on addressing:
• Resource management
• Packaging formats
• Security mechanisms need interoperability
Members of the initiative will derive a number of benefits:
• Interoperability between cloud platforms
• Awareness and support from system vendors
• Cloud service portability
• Management consistency across the enterprise and cloud platforms
Industry leadership members include:
AMD Cisco
Citrix EMC
HP IBM
Intel Microsoft
Oracle Novell
Red Hat Savvis
VMware
The goal of the incubator is to provide a set of specifications and foster industry thinking around cloud management and interoperability especially between clouds.
